As the Upper House (Rajya Sabha) passed crucial farm bills amid protests by the Opposition on September 20, 2020, a picture of a policeman showing a gun to a man is being shared extensively on social media.
The post implies that the picture is from a recent farmer’s protest.
“मत मारो गोलियो से मुझे मैं पहले से एक दुखी इंसान हूँ, मेरी मौत कि वजह यही हैं कि मैं पेशे से एक किसान हूँ. #kishanVirodhiNarendraModi, ” the post read.

Here’s the post link.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be misleading.
We put the picture through Reverse Image Search and found that it was taken in 2013.
The Reverse Image Search led us to an article by the Economic Times dated October 21, 2013, featuring the same image.

“Muzaffarnagar violence: Eight arrested, cases against 15, ” the headline of the article read. However, the caption of the picture was generic, so, we decided to dig deeper.
We ran another Reverse Image Search along with the relevant keywords and found an article by The Hindu dated September 30, 2013.

The caption of the picture read: An officer trying to control villagers during a clash on Sunday in Khera village of Meerut.
The same image was also featured in an article by The Indian Express in 2013, with the same caption. They also credited the image to news agency PTI.

According to the report, villagers clashed with police forces at the venue of a mahapanchayat that was banned by the administration in Meerut district.
The reports also stated that villagers gathered in Khera village in Sarghana for the mahapanchayat and were there to protest against the slapping of National Security Act on local BJP MLA Sangeet Singh Som, in connection with the Muzaffarnagar violence that took place in 2013.
It should also be noted that Akhilesh Yadav was the Chief Minister of Uttar Pradesh in 2013 and UPA government was at the Centre.
Based on the above facts, it is clear that the picture in circulation is old and has no relation to recent farmers’ protests. Hence, the post is misleading.
