After the Uttar Pradesh police cremated the body of the 19-year-old girl from Hathras, who was allegedly gang raped, in the early hours of September 30, 2020, a picture of Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath started doing the rounds on social media with a claim that he had watched the cremation live.
“क्या यह सही है जो दिख रहा है “हाथरस गैंग रेप पिड़िता को युपी की जल्लाद पुलिस वालों ने कैसे जलाया उसकी लाइव वीडियो देखता हुआ एक नाकारा मुख्यमंत्री” the post read.
(Translation: Is this what it looks like!? ️”An incompetent Chief Minister watching the live video of how the Hathras gangrape victim was burnt by UP’s executioner policemen.)

FACT CHECK
NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found that the image is morphed.
The first thing we noticed in the picture was that the picture of the cremation was bigger than that of the laptop screen.
We then put the picture through Reverse Image Search and found the original picture in an article by the Indian Express dated October 1, 2020.
As per the caption of the image, Uttar Pradesh CM Yogi Adityanath was talking to the family of the 19-year-old girl.
The same picture was also featured in an article by Zee News.
On comparing the two, it is clear that the picture being circulated on social media is edited.
Moreover, we then looked for the picture of the cremation that has been superimposed on the original image and found that the same image was tweeted by journalist Tanushree Pandey on September 30.
#Hathras victim burnt against her family’s will. Police locked family members & locals inside the house & forcibly burnt the body. Family couldn’t even see their daughter for one last time.
If torture done to the girl was horrific. This is beyond humanity. We’re finished pic.twitter.com/WkBiyHWLbF
