After the horrifying rape and murder incident in Hyderabad, a message has resurfaced on social media claiming that women travelling alone at night in auto or taxi can SMS the vehicle’s number to the Police on 9969777888 and their vehicle will then be tracked through GPS.
” Telangana police ki janib se khawateen ki hifazat ke liye ek achi service shuru kee gayi hai.(car…. cab…. auto) jis gaadi me aap baithe hai us gaadi ka number 9969777888 ko sms kariye. Fauran aapko ek sms ayega. Yani aapki gaadi GPRS se jud jayegi. Gaadi jidhar bhi jaayegi poori nazar rakhi jayegi. Ye message ko sab ladkiyon tak pahnchayiye, ” the text read.
FACT CHECKED
When NewsMobile Fact-Checked the post, we found out that it is an OLD number.
In 2014, Mumbai Police stated this number only for women in Mumbai but discontinued it in 2017 because of poor response.
If you try and call the number, it says “this number does not exist”.
After the message went viral, Hyderabad police also issued a notice stating that the viral message is fake.
“#FakeNews Circulating on #SocialMedia Regarding #Telangana Police Introduced a New Mobile Tracking Number (9969777888) While Travelling in Cabs & Autos it is Fake News Don’t Circulate it,” the caption of the post read.
Earlier, the same message has been in circulation under the name of different states and NewsMobile debunked a similar claim regarding the same number back in June 2019.
