Fact Checked: Old pictures resurface as aftermath of recent earthquake in Indonesia

After the 7.1 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s North Maluku, a set of pictures is making rounds on social media claiming to be of the aftermath of the quake.


At the time of filing this report, the above post was shared by over 3,200 Facebook users.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above posts and found the pictures to be old.
On individually checking each picture, we found that none of the pictures is from the recent earthquake in Indonesia.

On putting the above picture through Reverse Image Search, we found it on the official website of Getty Images and it was taken in December 2016.

According to Getty Images caption, “the members of a search and rescue team and residents carry the body of an earthquake victim in Pidie Jaya, Aceh province on December 7, 2016. At least 52 people died and dozens were feared trapped in rubble after a strong earthquake struck off Aceh province on Indonesia’s Sumatra island on December 7, officials said.”

The second picture is a screengrab of a video posted on news agency AFP’s official YouTube channel dated December 06th, 2016. The headline of the video read- “Over 50 dead in Indonesian earthquake: officials”.

The screengrab was taken from 00:10 minute counter of the video.

On putting the picture through Reverse Image Search, we found that the above picture was taken in 2018 after 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Indonesia’s Lombok.
We found the same picture on European Pressphoto Agency (EPA) which was published on August 6, 2018.

In conclusion the above inofrmation proves that the pictures in the viral post are old and not from the recent earthquake.
