Fact Check: Old video of lightning being shared in the name of Cyclone Amphan

A video of lightning and thunder is being circulated on the internet with a claim that the visuals are from Cyclone Amphan that made landfall in West Bengal on May 20.
A video is being shared with a caption, “Lightening in Amphan cyclone…”


FACT CHECK 

NewsMobile fact-checked the above video and found it to be old.
We extracted the keyframes of the video using the InVid tool and then put them through Reverse Image Search.
In results, we found links to several Facebook and Twitter posts, dated April 2020, featuring the same video.
A Facebook Page uploaded the same video on April 27, 2020, claiming that the video is from Andhra Pradesh.

A Twitter user, also uploaded the same video with the caption, “The lightning near the village I live (Andhra Pradesh) India.”


However, according to IMD, the tropical cyclone in the Bay of Bengal intensified into a super cyclonic storm between May 17-18 and made the landfall on May 20.
At the time of filing this report, Cyclone Amphan had claimed 80 lives in West Bengal, leaving many places flooded & devastated.
While NewsMobile couldn’t independently verify the origin of the video in question, it is clear that the video is old and was already available on the internet before Cyclone Amphan made landfall.
