Fact Check: Old video of a cyclone shared as eye of Cyclone Nisarga

As cyclone Nisarga made landfall in Gujarat and Maharashtra on June 3, 2020, videos and pictures of the cyclone and the resultant havoc started doing the rounds on social media.

A video showing visuals of a cyclone is being shared on social media with a claim that it is of cyclone Nisarga and was taken minutes before it made the landfall.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found that the video is old.
We extracted keyframes of the video and ran it through Reverse Image Search along with several keywords. On Yandex, we found a link to the same YouTube video.
The video was uploaded on October 25, 2019, with the title ‘Kyarr Cyclone #karnataka’.

Cyclone Kyarr was a tropical cyclone that originated in the Arabian Sea in October 2019 and later intensified into a super cyclonic storm, affecting the areas of Western India, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Socotra, and Somalia.
The same video was uploaded by another YouTube channel on October 25, 2019, with a claim that the video is from Bambolim beach in Goa.

NewsMobile could not independently verify the origin and the location of the video. However, details highlighted above show that the video existed on the internet before  Cyclone Nisarga made an appearance.
