A message is being circulated on social media claiming that Muslim regiment of the Indian army had refused to fight in India’s 1965 war with Pakistan.
“मुस्लिम रेजिमेंट ने 1965 भारत-पाक युद्ध के समय लड़ने से मना कर दिया था। सोचो ये इस्लामिक जिहाद IAS/IPS बनकर देश का कितना बुरा कर सकते हैं।” the post read in Hindi.
(Translation: The Muslim regiment refused to fight during the 1965 Indo-Pak War. Think about what they can do to the country by becoming IAS / IPS.)

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found it to be false.
We went through the list of Indian Army regiments but did not find any specific Muslim regiment. We also came across a report by ABP News dated June 2020 about regiments in the Indian Army but did not find any mention of any Muslim regiment.
Moreover, when we ran a keyword search, we found a report by NDTV dated October 15, 2020, stating that a group of 120 retired officers have warned Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Ram Nath Kovind seeking action over fake ‘Muslim regiment’ social media post.

The same was reported by TOI in an article dated October 15, 2020.

The letter dated October 14 was also shared with the media.
” The ‘Muslim Regiment’ posts are an attack on India’s Armed Forces. Remaining a-political and secular has been an article of faith for every soldier, sailor and airman, both at the institutional and individual levels. Every soldier swears to protect the Constitution of India even at peril to his/her life in the service of our nation, and serves in harsh and high-risk field service conditions. He/she also endorses the principle of civil control over India’s Armed Forces, which have loyally upheld Constitutional democratic principles, ” the letter said.
We also found a blog post in TOI by Lieutenant General (Retd.) Syed Ata Hasnain dated November 30, 2017. In the blogpost, he clearly states that there never was a Muslim regiment in the Indian Army.
Hence, from the above information, it is clear that the post in question is false.
