Fact Check: Was Canadian PM Justin Trudeau part of the protests against Indian farm laws? Here's the truth

0 199

Making his stance clear on the ongoing farmers’ protest in India, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that Canada will always stand up for the right of peaceful protests and human rights.
On the occasion of Gurupurab, the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak, while talking to the Sikh community during an online interaction, PM Trudeau expressed concern over the condition of farmers in India and the ongoing protests.
Soon after his remark, a picture of him sitting with people from the Sikh community started making rounds on social media with the claim that he too joined the members of the Sikh community in the protest.
The Facebook caption read: “किसान” भाईयो के “समर्थन” मे धरने पर बैठे “कनाडा” के प्रधानमंत्री! इसको कहते है विदेश मे डंका बजना!
(Translation: Prime Minister of Canada sitting on strike in support of farmers! )

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be false.
A simple Reverse Image search of the picture led us to an article by the Hindustan Times from 2015 featuring the same picture.
According to the article, the picture was clicked when Canadian PM Justin Trudeau visited a temple and a gurdwara on the occasion of Diwali.

The picture was captioned: “On behalf of the government of Canada, Sophie (his wife) and I wish a very happy Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas to all those observing these holidays with their family and loved ones,” Trudeau said. (REUTERS)
Since the picture was credited to Reuters, we also checked the original picture on their website.

“Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau listens to speeches at the Gurdwara Sahib Ottawa Sikh Society in Ottawa, Canada, November 11, 2015. REUTERS/Patrick Doyle,” the picture description read.
Moreover, when we did a keyword search, we did not find any media report that states that Justin Trudeau has joined the protest. However, according to media reports, Canadian PM reiterated his position on the ongoing farmers’ protest against the farm bills in India on December 4, 2020, and said, “Canada will always stand up for the right of peaceful protest anywhere around the world. We are pleased to see moves towards de-escalation and dialogue.”

Hence, this proves that an old picture is being circulated with a false claim on social media.
