Fact Check: Picture of school students hanging onto a cable is NOT from Uttarakhand

picture is doing rounds on social media in which a group of students on their way to school are seen virtually clinging on to a rope.  The social media post claims that the picture is from Uttarakhand where students are having to face such hardship for going to school while a grand temple is being built and the country is going ahead with plans of bullet train.


The caption read: “ये तस्वीर उसी देश की जहा एक भव्य मंदिर बन रहा है उत्तराखंड की तस्वीर बच्चे स्कूल जाते हुए। देश बुलेट ट्रेन की ओर अग्रसित।
(English Translation, “This picture is of the same country where a grand temple is being built. It is a picture of Uttarakhand where children are going to school and our country is still heading towards the bullet train.”)

At the time of filing this report, the post was shared over 14,000 times.

We also found the same picture on Twitter claiming to be from Uttarakhand via a verified account of Maharashtra Governor Bhagat Singh Koshyari.

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found it to be misleading.

On putting the picture through Google Reverse Image Search, we found this picture in the news article on Zing News page dated September 28, 2013, claiming that dozens of students in poor areas of Nepal are struggling to cross the river by swinging onto cables while going to school.

On digging further, we found similar information on Uitkijpost.nl dated September 16, 2019, claiming that the picture is from Nepal.

Further, we also found a listicle on 2 Minute Facts with the title “Top 10 Dangerous Routes To School Kids Around The World Have To Take Everyday” claiming that children have to use these cables in the Benighat district of Nepal to reach their school on the other side of the river. 

In conclusion, with the help of the above information, we can say that the post in circulation uses a picture from Nepal while projecting it to be from Uttarakhand.
