After the Indian Army gunned down Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist Riyaz Ahmed Naikoo, a picture started doing the rounds on social media claiming that residents of Awantipora in Jammu and Kashmir pelted stones at the Army.
The caption of the post read: “आतंकी रियाज नायकू के मारे जाने के बाद जम्मू कश्मीर के अवंतिपुरा में सैकड़ों लोगों की भीड़ ने सुरक्षाबलों पर पथराव किया।
fir se najarband kar do kitne logo ko..bahar nikal ke galti kia..
(Translation: Hundreds of people pelted stones at security forces in Jammu and Kashmir’s Awantipura after terrorist Riyaz Naiku was killed)

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked this post and found the picture being circulated as old.
When we put the picture through Reverse Image Search, we came across a report by Hindustan Times, dated July 22, 2018, featuring the same picture.

The caption of the photo read: “Kashmiri protesters clash with police on the outskirts of Srinagar after forces killed four militants, including Islamic State of Jammu and Kashmir (ISJK) chief Dawood Salafi during an encounter at Nowshera village, on June 22, 2018.(Waseem Andrabi/HT Photo)”
On digging further, we found that people did pelt stones at the Indian Army after the Hizbul Commander, Naikoo was neutralised. But clearly the photo used in the post being circulated is old and not related to Naikoo’s death.

It is clear that the picture in question has no relation to the death of Riyaz Naikoo.
