Fact Check: Don't believe this viral post about vaccine for COVID-19

Amid the outbreak of WHO declared pandemic COVID-19, that has claimed more than 6,000 lives across the globe till now, a post is going viral on social media claiming Israel has developed a vaccine for the COVID-19.
“NO MORE CORONA VIRUS DEATH: God bless Israelites. Finally, they have discovered vaccine for Corona viruses. COVID-19, ” the caption claimed.




FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the above post and found the claim to be false.
We ran a Google search and found several reports stating that Israel’s state-funded MIGAL Research Institute announced that they are a step closer to developing a vaccine for COVID-19 and if things go as planned, the vaccine would be ready in few weeks.

According to the article, the institute has been working for four years toward a vaccine that could be customized for various viruses.
In a press release dated Feb 27, 2020, MIGAL Research Institute said that the vaccine is developed right now is an effective vaccine against avian coronavirus Infectious Bronchitis Virus (IBV), a disease affecting poultry. The press release said that the same vaccine will soon be adapted to create a vaccine for COVID-19.
Moreover, according to the WHO website, “to date, there is no specific medicine recommended to prevent or treat the new coronavirus (2019-nCoV).”

Thus, from the above information, we can conclude.

  1. The vaccine developed by MIGAL Research Institute is from is for poultry animals and not humans. However, they will try to adapt it and develop a vaccine for COVID-19 which might take a few weeks. 

  2. According to WHO, to date, there are no known medical remedies to prevent COVID-19.

Hence, the above viral post is false.
