As suburban railway services resume in Kolkata after being suspended for seven months due to COVID-19, a video of an overcrowded railway station has started making rounds on social media, claiming that the video was taken on the first day the train services resuming.
In the video, the huge crowd can be seen flouting social distancing norms as they wait for the train on the station.

FACT CHECK

NewsMobile fact-checked the post and found the claim to be misleading.
We extracted the keyframes of the video and ran them through Google Reverse Image Search. The search led us the same video on YouTube dated 2018.
“Krishnanagar Bongaon Local Train – Ranaghat Station” the title read.

The video was also shared by another YouTube channel in 2018 with a similar title. “Ranaghat station Today 8.30am….krishnanagar Bongaon local…😯😯😯😯 video Sni” the post read.

Ranaghat is a town in Nadia district of West Bengal. It is approximately 78 kms away from Kolkata. From the above information, it is clear that the video is from 2018 and has no relation to the current COVID-19 pandemic or restarting of train services in West Bengal.
However, we also found a report by Hindustan Times dated November 11, 2020, stating that people jostled at several stations to board local trains, as services resumed after seven months.

Hence, based on the above fact check, we can clearly say that the post in circulation is misleading.
